Introduction
Good morning! It’s March 2nd, 2025, and welcome to “Here’s a Minute”, a short-form podcast with history, fun facts, and a prompt in a minute — or maybe two. I’m Vian Vera.
Historical Fact
And I’m Lex Wu. On March 2nd, 1959, the Sydney Opera House had a little ceremony to start construction. Its unique design and world-class performers are known throughout the world, but its usage was unfortunately hindered by the original competition’s specifications. See, this entire building was made after Jørn Utzon won a competition to design a theatrical hall for the city.
Fun Fact
The estimated cost of construction was 7 million dollars and estimated time until completion was 4 years. It took 102 million dollars and fourteen years to complete. And the costs were actually largely covered by a state lottery.
Writing Prompts
You’ve decided to drive down to Sydney all the way from Brisbane. However, you neglected to remember that it’s a 13 hour drive on the scenic route through the desert. You’re already out of water and you don’t have a clue how far you need to go - now what? The kangaroos, koalas, and various other horrors of Australian wildlife have overtaken the Sydney Opera house. Now they run the show, and they’re putting on a performance of a lifetime! Write your review.
