Introduction
Good morning! It’s February 9th, 2025, and welcome to “Here’s a Minute”, a short-form podcast with history, fun facts, and a prompt in a minute — or maybe two. I’m Lex Wu.
Historical Fact
And I’m Vian Vera. February 9th, 1942 marks when daylight savings time was implemented over the country during World War II. This act set the country one hour ahead for an entire year.
It was previously used during World War I, implemented first by Germany in 1916, then by the United States in 1918. It returned in 1942, was repealed in 1945, and then established as we know it today in 1966, and it’s been a pain in the butt twice a year ever since.
Fun Fact
Daylight savings doesn’t even help that much. People are more likely to be involved in accidents after the swap in time, most likely because you’re groggy from waking up an hour later or earlier.
Writing Prompts
- You wake up one morning and find the sun has yet to rise. An hour passes, then another and the world is still shrouded in darkness.
- It’s nighttime and it’s completely dark outside, but work doesn’t get out until 5PM. Document your escape from work in extreme detail.
